Purposeful Practice
Develop Skills by Doing
Referee development takes more than studying rules. PREP gives you opportunities to practice specific skills, apply what you're learning in real officiating situations, and receive focused feedback from an experienced trainer.
Some activities can happen wherever you live. Others bring you together with a trainer or other referees when on-court experience adds the greatest value.
PREP Activities
Ways You'll Develop Your Skills
Different activities serve different purposes throughout your development. Your PREP trainer helps you focus on the experiences that will be most valuable at each stage.
Skills Drills
Practice specific officiating skills through focused exercises designed to build confidence, consistency, and good habits.
Purpose: Develop and reinforce individual practical skills.
Practice Match Officiating
Apply what you're learning while officiating practice matches and other real-game situations.
Purpose: Turn knowledge and individual skills into complete match performance.
Video Review
Submit video of your officiating for trainer review and receive detailed coaching tied to specific moments in your performance.
Purpose: See what happened, understand why, and know what to work on next.
Field Observation
Have a trainer observe specific practical officiating skills and document feedback on what is developing well and what needs additional work.
Purpose: Measure skill development through focused observation.
Individual Coaching
Work directly with your PREP trainer on individual development needs, questions, challenges, and next steps.
Purpose: Keep your development focused on what you need most.
On-Court Clinics
Participate in strategically scheduled on-court sessions where trainers can observe performance, provide real-time coaching, and create concentrated opportunities for practice.
Purpose: Use in-person trainer time where it adds the greatest value.
Credential Readiness
As you progress through your training, PREP helps you evaluate your readiness to demonstrate the knowledge, judgment, practical skills, and consistency expected of a competent pickleball referee.
Purpose
Identify remaining development needs and prepare to demonstrate the officiating competence required for the proposed PREP Referee Credential.
Practice with a Purpose
PREP activities aren't simply boxes to check. Each experience is designed to help you apply what you're learning, receive useful feedback, and determine what to work on next.
